General Summary: This important position is vital to the continued written and oral fluency with the

classes. The afternoon class will be made up of different age ranges and varying stages of Englishlanguage
fluency.
The afternoon session runs from 2:30pm to 4:30pm Sunday through Thursday.
Responsibilities
1. Writing and Grammar
Writing skills are a key to effective communication. Depending on the student’s needs,
prompting students to write compositions or essays – or simply teaching the basics of sentence
composition – may be a big part of the duties. Since the English language can be particularly
difficult to master – especially for students whose first language is not English – the Teacher may
spend a great deal of time teaching proper grammar.
2. Reading
Help students polish their reading skills. This can include helping students fully comprehend the
content of written passages, or having student read aloud to help with oral communication
skills. Teacher may assign students reading homework to be reviewed during the next session.
3. Speaking
Students may come to the Teacher simply to have someone with whom they can practice their
speaking skills. Many students live in communities in which there is limited interaction in
English, or the student may simply require a bit more confidence about using their limited
English. The Teacher will converse with the student, and make corrections and
recommendations as appropriate.
Overriding Requirement
The goal of the afternoon session is to help students improve their proficiency with English. The objective for the Afternoon Teacher is to facilitate this in fun, creative ways. After a long day of class work and activities, students may respond less well to structured language lessons in the afternoon. The idea is to plan and prepare daily sessions, in conjunction with the Vice Principal and Teachers, which engage the student both consciously and subconsciously. This may also involve play & outdoor activities.
